Asia Big Data Association First Meet-up: Deep Learning for Recommender System

To kickstart the sharing on Big Data in a more approachable setting, the Asia Big Data Association (ABDA) hosted its first casual interest group meet-up in Singapore’s central business district at One Raffles Place, on 8 August 2017 from 7 to 9pm, with the sharing topic on “Deep Learning for Recommender System” together with its strategic alliance partner—LinkSure, and venue sponsor—Ambition Singapore. The meet-up was well attended by more than 60 participants who are mainly finance and energy industry professionals, and data science students. Through the meet-up, more efficient data processing like Google’s new machine learning approach— TensorFlow wide and deep learning were discussed.

Ms. Lydia Chow, Digital Strategist of LinkSure, welcomed everyone to the meet-up. She gave an introduction Asia Big Data Association (ABDA) and its strategic alliance partner, LinkSure.

Speakers and sponsor representatives for the evening: (from left to right) Ms. Lydia Chow (LinkSure), Mr. Wilson Huishen Jiang (Ambition Singapore), Mr. Michael Nette (Ambition Singapore), Dr. Duan Rubing(LinkSure), Dr. Fan Haijin (LinkSure).

After an introduction of the Association, event partner, and sponsor, Dr. Duan delivered the first deep learning sharing with an overview of the deep learning landscape for recommender systems. Dr. Fan then concluded the evening’s sharing with his insights sharing on deep learning algorithms.

Dr. Duan Rubing, Principal Data Scientist at LinkSure, shared his insights on how to leverage the GPU-based systems and deep learning to train more challenging types of data input faster and better with a bigger processing capacity,  summarised the research breakthrough on deep learning, and introduced eight deep learning models that can be used on recommender systems including Autoencoder, GAN, RNN, etc.

Dr. Fan Haijin, Data Scientist at LinkSure, shared insights on various deep learning algorithms and its application.

After the sharing by Dr. Duan and Dr. Fan, the audience exchanged pointers on the challenges and applications of Google’s new machine learning approach— TensorFlow wide and deep learning model—to improve recommendation accuracy.

Three lucky participants won the lucky draw of grocery cash vouchers worth up to S$170 sponsored by Ambition Singapore.

More meetups on big data analytics topics are in the pipeline. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to be a speaker or sponsor for upcoming meet-ups. For more meet-up details, please visit www.meetup.com/Asia-Big-Data-Meetup.
